The use of language

I LOVE language. I love having a large vocabulary. I love using my large vocabulary. But I feel a responsibility to use that language correctly. You know. As in using the words as they were meant to be used and fitting their definitions or connotations.

What am I getting at? What has crawled up my craw irritating me now?

People who use words improperly.

Not typos. Who doesn't have typos. Actually using words improperly. Not mix ups. I don't care if you use principle or principal to describe the head of your high school. I mean, I hope to not make those kinds of mistakes. But we all do sometime. And sometimes they can be confusing (affective/effective). No. I have a very few 'special' ones in mind.

I'm sure you've thought of these before. But the use of the word 'literally'. It means actually. So, if you say "I literally ate the entire cake" then you ate the entire cake. If you say "I literally was able to jump buildings in a single bound" you are using it wrong (unless you are Superman).

This is a special one for me "nonplussed". It means bewildered. Look it up. How is it used? To mean calm. Huh? How did that happen. Read it in books, its used to describe someone who is confused or shocked. Not someone who is calm or able to roll with it.

This one is a little different. Basically. I can tell you. As a speech professor, I have NEVER heard this word used when needed. "Basically it was an ice cream cone" Its such a stronger sentence without the 'basically.' And the number of times its used...so irritating to me.

And one more, for now, Unique. How many people want to be unique, or describe their style of life, religion, belief, parenting, as unique. And then start saying "oh yeah, i do that" when someone talks specifics. Unique is a great word. It has a Q so it sounds big and worth of the 50 cent word status. That doesn't mean it fits the situation you are assigning it to. Unique. ONE OF A KIND. Not One of 20 others. One of 3000 others. Unique means the only one like it.

this has been brought to you by the letters A and F and the number 16.

My 5 year old.

I have a little girl. She is the brightness of the sun. She is beauty of the moon. She is radiance and starlight. She is every platitude known to man.

There is a word that I've been mulling over that I think suits her more than any of these phrases. The word for her is bold.

Merriam-Webster tells us that bold means "fearless before danger : showing or requiring a fearless daring spirit"

Thats my girl. That's my loving, darling, daring, bold little one.

And today she turned 5. Today she celebrated her birthday with songs, with cake, with dressing up, with playing pretend, with puppet shows, and with hugs. Every bit the darling. Every bit the ham that she is.

I adore my little one. I absolutely am constantly enamored with being her mom and being entrusted with such a fantastic soul.

2 hands

I love what we can do with our hands. Make things, pick up babies, wipe away tears, type answers to questions, scratch itches, drive cars, answer phones, paint pictures, etc. etc. etc.

How amazing is all of that. With our two hands we can change everything. Work with things. Make things. I love that. and I love my two hands.

how shallow! my tv. its 52 inches of lovely goodness. I NEED my tv. it has all my friends that aren't in my computer in it. My friends at the food network. BBCAmerica, Comedy Central, Jay and Conan, Dr. House, and the good people at Heroes keeping me in suspense. I love my tv. I protested the size. "We dont need that" "Thats a lot of money for something we don't really need" "Who needs a tv that large"

answers: Yes we do, no, its a bargain for such a valuable tool, and we do.

I will reiterate, I LOVE my tv. Football looks AMAZING on it (go Skins!) and not to mention the hd movies. hot stuff.

So that is my one. One Big screen tv!
